The institute was incepted in the year 1986 under Department of Training and Technical Education, Govt. of Delhi as a guest institute in Pusa Polytechnic, which was offering just one Diploma in Electronics Engineering with specialisation in Digital Electronics and Microprocessor System Design & Medical Electronics. Gradually it expanded its wings by offering other Diploma courses i.e. Diploma in Computer Engineering and Instrumentation & Control Engineering. It shifted to its own building in the year 1996, which is spread over an area of 3.14 hectares. The campus is completely self-reliant and built up as per the norms prescribed by All India Council for Technical Education for conducting Diploma/Post-diploma programmes with provision for further expansion and up-gradation.
The main building of the Polytechnic comprises of 6 blocks viz. Block A,B,C,D,E & F. It has in-built features like lecture-theatres, classrooms, workshops, laboratories & student related facilities, such as common room, canteen etc. Further the campus has residential complex comprising of15 flats of Type IV and 15 flats of Type I.
Ambedkar Polytechnic offers only high-tech and specialised courses in advanced and emerging areas of technology. In order to provide horizontal flexibility and vertical mobility besides offering flexibility to the students to work at individual space, Multi-Point Entry and Credit System Scheme has been introduced in the disciplines of Electronics Engg. with specialisation in Digital Electronics and Microprocessor System Design & Medical Electronics and Instrumentation & Control Engineering. Students under MPEC Scheme students with entry qualification of 10+2 can even complete Diploma in two & half years.

The library is housed in a hall of approx. 300 Sq.M. the number of books in the library is presently approximately 8000. However, they are being augmented every year to meet the needs of different disciplines. Presently more than 20 journals & magazines are being received in the library. DELNET facility is available.
Learning Resource Centre: LRUC has been established to supplement curriculum based teaching with latest and emerging trends in Technology.
Community Polytechnic : In the year 1998, this polytechnic was selected for implementation of community polytechnic scheme under the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Govt. of India. Courses offered are as follows : -

Training & Placement Cell :
In order to provide secure and suitable placement to the students a dedicated Training & Placement Cell is available in the Institute which caters to the training and placement of the students. Major actitivies undertaken by the Cell are : · Industry- Institute interaction activity · Campus interviews & placement · Industrial training & Projects · Industrial visits · Expert lectures in advanced and emerging areas of technology · Seminars/Workshops · Industry interaction for revision/modification of curriculum · Entrepreneurship Camp After successful completion of various courses, students have been absorbed for jobs in fields like Sales and Marketing, Production, Customer Support, Servicing, Development, Technician etc in various reputed companies like Tata Consultancy Services, C-Dot, Siemens, Textronics, Philips, Timonic Electronics, Hospimedica Intn. Pvt. Ltd., HCL COMMET, TATA, IBM, SABISA Computers, Oem Instrument, R.V.Associate, Micro Tech. Infosys, CALCOM Electronic Pvt. Ltd. etc. Feedback from industry is obtained regarding students training and industry is involved in the assessment of the students’ training.
